Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak at 4,566m, is often overshadowed by Kilimanjaro but offers a rewarding and scenic trekking experience. This dormant volcano, which last erupted in 1910, takes 3–4 days to climb, making it perfect for acclimatization before Kilimanjaro or as an adventurous trek on its own. The journey begins in Arusha National Park via the Momella Route, accompanied by an armed ranger for protection. Trekkers pass through diverse vegetation zones, from lush montane forests to alpine deserts, encountering wildlife such as giraffes, zebras, baboons, and colobus monkeys. The final ascent to Socialist Peak follows the crater rim, offering breathtaking views of Meru’s dramatic landscape and an opportunity to explore the ash cone formed by the 1910 eruption. The climb is quieter than Kilimanjaro but still demanding, requiring proper acclimatization for a successful summit.
